About Us

Records Management Society of Japan, founded in March 1989, is an independent, not-for -profit, academic body for promoting research on records management issues in Japan. As of March 2019, the individual and student members of the society are 168 (including 3 fellow), while the organizational members and the sponsors are 20.

 

Members of the society include records management specialists in corporations and organizations, staff of records management products and services companies, archivists, and researchers of records management studies, archival science and library and information science.

 Membership categories and annual fees are:

  • Individual Member (Regular): \7,000
  • Student Member (Student): \3,000

  • A free copy of Records Management (journal) and the Newsletter of the society
  • The opportunity to join and make presentations at conferences and to submit papers for Records Management

Activities of the Society

  • Conference: once a year, around in May
  • Publication of the journal (see below), the newsletter, and others
  • Regular meetings: 5-6 times a year in Tokyo and Kanto area, and in Kansai area
  • Biennially award to the best research paper in the journal
  • Biennially award to the people who contributed to the development of records management in Japan
  • Research grant to individual researchers concerning records management

In June 2006, the RMSJ, in cooperation with the Japan Society of Archival Science, compiled Introduction to Archival Science: Memory and Records into the Future (An anthology of articles translated into Japanese. ISBN: 978-4816919813). This was published by Nichigai Associates, Inc.

Records Management: The Journal of the Society

Records Management, inaugurated in 1989, is the peer-reviewed journal of the Records Management Society of Japan. It is published twice a year in Japanese. The latest issue, No. 76, was published in March 2019.

The journal includes: research articles, research notes, articles of the regular meetings and seminars, research essays, book reviews, and others related to records management issues.

 

The majority of the published issues (from No. 34 in 1997), except the most recent ones, are made available to the public FOR FREE via CiNii (a database of academic articles, powered by the National Institute of Informatics Japan). However, the issues published within one year are not available, and the issues published 1-5 years ago are available for a fee via CiNii.
